스리랑카 앞바다서 불탔던 싱가폴 선적 침몰 시작

스리랑카 앞바다에서 화학물질을 가득 실은 대형 컨테이너선이 화재 발생 2주일 만에 침몰하기 시작하면서

다량의 기름 등 각종 오염물질 유출로 해양 생물들이 떼죽음을 당할 수 있다는 우려가 커지고 있다.

스리랑카 매체 실론투데이는 3일(현지시간) 스리랑카 서쪽 해안에서 싱가포르 국적의 대형 컨테이너선 'MV X-프레스 펄'호가 선미부터 가라앉기 시작했다고 보도했다. 콜롬보페이지는 "배의 절반 이상이 지금 바다에 가라앉고 있다"고 전했다.

스리랑카 당국은 전날 사고 선박을 인양하려 했지만 실패했다.

스리랑카 해군 대변인 인디카 데 실바는 브리핑에서 "사고 선박을 서쪽으로 500~600m 정도 견인하려다가 선미가 가라앉기 시작해서 견인을 포기했다"고 밝혔다.

콜롬보에서 북쪽 30㎞에 걸친 청정 해변지역이 심각하게 오염될 것으로 예상했다.

사고 선박 선주인 'MV X-프레스 피더스' 측은 "선박 일부가 물에 잠겨 있어서 오염 위험이 크다"고 밝혔다.

스리랑카 해양보호단체 '펄 프로텍터스'의 무디사 카투와왈라는 사고 선박 침몰은 "최악의 환경재난 시나리오"라며 "기름 유출 오염이 훨씬 커질 것"이라고 우려했다.

길이 186m의 MV X-프레스 펄호는 지난달 초 인도 서부 하지라를 떠나 콜롬보에 기항 후 싱가포르로 갈 예정이었다.

지난달 20일 콜롬보 북서쪽으로 18㎞ 떨어진 지점에서 입항을 기다리다가 불이 났다.

사고 당시 1486개의 컨테이너에 기름 278t, 가스 50t, 질산 25t 등 화학물질이 실려 있었다.

싱가포르 정부는 화재 발생 12일 만인 지난 1일 가까스로 불길을 잡았지만, 바다 오염은 걷잡을 수 없이 커졌다.

배에서 흘러나온 기름띠가 40㎞ 인근으로 퍼졌다. 해안에는 물고기, 새, 바다거북의 사체가 밀려왔다.

선박에 실렸던 플라스틱 조각들도 해변으로 밀려왔다. 군인과 자원봉사자들이 584t의 플라스틱을 일일이 손으로 제거했다고 콜롬보페이지는 전했다.

세계적인 홍차 산지로도 유명한 스리랑카는 인도양의 하얀 모래사장과 야자수가 어우러진 아름다운 자연풍경으로 인근 몰디브와 함께 '지상 낙원'이라는 별명이 붙은 곳이다.

아울러 고래상어와 만타레이 등이 출몰해 전세계 스쿠버 다이버들에게도 큰 사랑을 받고 있는 곳이다.

저녁에는 해변에 모래사장에 알을 낳으러 오는 바다거북의 행렬도 볼 만큼 해양환경이 잘 보존된 곳이라는 평가를 받고 있다.

이번 사고 전까지 어업으로 생계를 유지하던 어부들도 망연자실 하고 있다.

어부 수다스 페르난도는 "35년간 고기잡이를 해왔지만 이런 경험은 난생 처음"이라며 "화학물질을 운반하는 배가 우리의 삶을 파괴했다. 정부가 책임져야 한다"고 CNN에 말했다.

Burning cargo ship causes ‘eco-disaster’ flooding Sri Lanka beach with toxic waste – as public flee from ‘acid pellets’

A BURNING cargo ship has resulted in environmental disaster for Sri Lanka beaches as they're now coated in toxic plastic pellets.

The X-Press Pearl vessel had sailed from India to Sri Lanka was anchored near Colombo when a fire started on May 20 and intensified over a week
According to the X-Press Pearl Incident Information Center, the 13-person crew and 12-person firefighting crew had to be evacuated from the ship on May 24.

The fire continued to rage and burn through 81 containers full of "dangerous goods", such as the 25 tons of nitric acid said to be on board.

Although the fire was brought under control with the help of the Sri Lankan Navy, smoke continued to pour from the sinking wreckage.

The ship was also carrying 86 tons of plastic pellets that are now a white blanket over Sri Lankan beaches.
This toxic pellets are having a negative impact on the environment and the animals living there as a clean up team desperately tries to tackle the mess.

Experts are regarding this as one of the biggest environmental disasters to affect the country.

The ship is now sinking and its leaking contents could cause major damage.

According to Mongabay, multiple beaches along the south coast of Sri Lanka have been affected.
Locals are being warned not to touch the plastic pellets, called nurdles, because they could be contaminated by some of the dangerous chemicals onboard the boat.

Nurdles are often used to make other plastic goods but can absorb chemicals and disrupt the food chain if they're swallowed by animals.
Authorities have had to ban fishing in the area and are analysing dead wildlife.

Sri Lanka's Marine Environment Protection and military are trying to clean up the pellets and stop them flowing back into the water.

Collected nurdles are being taken to a hazardous waste yard for scientific analysis.

It's unclear how long the cleanup operation could take but it could be lengthened by Sri Lanka's nationwide COVID-19 lockdown keeping volunteers away.
